Following the completion of my BS in Chemistry, I enlisted in the US Coast Guard to live out my drive of visiting the North and South Pole. During those voyages I discovered my love for marine microbes. I completed my PhD in Microbial Ecology at the University of Georgia's Odum School of Ecology and my postdoc at the University of Washington's School of Oceanography. I ask questions that make connections between oceans and human health. A central theme of my work is that healthy oceans are essential to the habitability of our planet - for humans and all other forms of life.
