Insurance

There are many coverage options for A&M employees and a lot of details to consider. You can expect A&M to cover a portion of the cost for coverage, but these contributions don't start until the first of the month after your 60th day of employment.

Coverage

A&M has a variety of coverage options available. You will have the opportunity to enroll in the following:

  • Health
  • Dental
  • Long-Term Disability
  • Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D)
  • Vision
  • Flexible Spending Accounts
  • Life Insurance

You may also enroll dependents in Health, Dental, Vision, Dependent Life, and/or AD&D if you have that coverage on yourself. The Texas A&M University System has an excellent Employee Benefits Guide that explains coverage information in greater detail. The System also has several other resources online that explain the different benefit programs.

Cost

Premiums will vary based on the coverage you choose, but Texas A&M-CC lowers the total cost for employees by contributing an amount each month towards Health and Basic Life premiums. The total contribution depends on the specific coverage you choose.

Delayed Employer Contributions

Employer contributions do not begin until the first of the month after your 60th day of employment (unless you are transferring with no break in service from another Texas state agency or institute of higher education). For new employees, paying the full premium for three months can be a considerable expense. Some employees elect to delay coverage or continue their existing coverage until they qualify for employer contributions.

Pretax Premiums

Many premiums are deducted from your paycheck before you pay federal income and Social Security taxes unless you request otherwise. This means that you pay less tax, and your take-home pay is higher.
