The most fundamental way to create the title of a web page is through HTML code. Title is otherwise one of the metadata tags for any document, including web pages.
Simply add the title between html
tag title
: <title>[title of the document]</title>
.
Unique Titles for documents
Documents, especially on the web, should have unique titles. Consider both screen reader users and saving web pages as bookmarks.
If every page's title is "Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi", all you know about the web page is that it may be maintained by TAMU-CC. You do not know what content is really on any web page.
A large website like the university's will need even more unique names depending on the content on the page. For example, if the page's title is "Contact Us | Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi", that could be the contact page for multiple departments. Be more specific, like "Contact Us | Information Technology | Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi".
Naming conventions
Always start from the most specific to the most general. When reading your bookmarks, they may cut off, so you cannot see the whole title.
For example, a web page with the title "Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi | Information Technology | Contact Us" may cut off at "Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi | Information Tech". So this title could represent any web page within the Information Technology website.
Use "Contact Us | Information Technology | Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi" instead, going from the most specific to the most general about the web page.
