Kyle Carson: Uplifting Trans and Queer Writers
Windward Review Volume 22: Revolution contributor Kyle Carson has spent his life pursuing his dual passions: writing and social work. As a social worker, Kyle has spent his career working with vulnerable children and families within child protective services. He has worked in a variety of settings, from foster care to rehab centers, and has always advocated for literacy programming and LGBTQ+ inclusion. He has fought for the rights of LGBTQ+ youth by organizing staff trainings, advocating for environmental changes, and providing education on gender identity. Kyle draws on his social work experience, and his lived experience as a queer trans man, in his work as an authenticity reader for publishers such as Scholastic.
As a writer, Kyle primarily focuses on novels, though he experiments with a bit of everything, from poetry to short stories to nonfiction. Previously represented by Michael Carr of Veritas Literary, Kyle primarily writes queer speculative fiction that thematically explores the power dynamics between individuals and institutions. He is currently working on a sci-fi novel pitched as “Ghostbusters meets Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” set within a psychiatric facility. “How to Win Subjects and Manipulate (the) People” (Excerpt):
“The bones you buried in your garden have resurfaced, driven up like bubbles seeking air, releasing their knowledge back to the people. They’ve taken up the old ways, the weaving and beading and tanning and tending and mending and screaming and loving and living and living and living, and they will not be broken a second time.
They have reforged themselves in their own image, made stronger through the searing resilience of the soul, and soon your every attempt to sew discord will only stew communal rage.
Soon the streets will flood with people, their voices echoed high.
Soon the hands that built your kingdom will come to take it back.”
