Course Reserves

The library offers ways for faculty to provide both physical and digital materials to their students in their classes.

Digital Reserves

Digital reserves are hosted in Canvas using the Course Library tool. Adding Course Library to the navigation for a course will allow faculty to:

  • create an interactive reading list for their students which can include both library resources and free resources on the web
  • upload files and request that we purchase copyright licensing as needed
  • ask the library to consider purchasing materials that we don't already own for their students to use in class
  • request that the library digitize a chapter or a journal article from our print collection and upload it to the Canvas course

At the end of the semester, the instructor can duplicate the reading list and associate it with future classes as needed. The library will handle any processing such as renewing copyright licenses.

Placing print materials on reserve

Faculty can also place print materials on reserve for their students. Materials include:

  • books from the library's collection
  • books owned by faculty members (such as copies of course textbooks)
Students may use these materials in the library for a period of three hours.

To place a physical book on reserve, visit the Circulation Desk in the library and fill out a Print Reserves Form. If visiting the library is not possible, please contact libreserves@tamucc.edu.

Library staff will process materials for access, which includes barcoding and labeling personal copies. This process usually takes no more than seven business days. During peak periods, such as at the beginning of each semester, it may take longer. We will process items in the order that we receive them.

When you place items on reserve, you can choose to have them housed in the library until the end of the semester, the end of the calendar year, or indefinitely (only available for reserves requests placed by departments, not individual faculty). At the end of the reserve period, materials will be returned to your office via campus mail.

Additionally, you may remove your materials from reserve at any time during the semester. You (or a designated representative) can pick up reserve items from the Circulation Desk. You can also request that we deliver materials to your office via campus mail.

Students can request assistance with print materials on reserve from the staff at the Circulation Desk.

Media Reserves

Videos can also be placed on reserve and are hosted on a platform called Mediasite. If you have a DVD you would like your students to watch, or if there is one in the library's collection you'd like to use, we can digitize that item, get it closed captioned if necessary, and host it so that you can link to it from Canvas.
