Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Celebrates Summer 2012 Commencement

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – More than 500 graduates from the University’s five colleges walked across the stage to receive their diplomas during Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi’s summer 2012 commencement on Saturday, Aug. 11, at the American Bank Center arena.

Keynote speaker was John Sharp, chancellor of the Texas A&M University System, a statewide network of 11 universities, seven state agencies and a comprehensive health science center that educates more than 120,000 students each year. Sharp congratulated all the graduates, especially those who are the first in the family to graduate from college.

“By doing what you are doing today, you’ve completely changed the future of your family,” he said. “The question for your children, your grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren is no longer ‘am I going to college?’ It is ‘where am I going to college?”

Susan Garrett, who graduated with her Bachelor of Science in Nursing, is not only the first in her family to receive a college degree, she is a non-traditional student and single mother of a 5-year-old. Garrett credits the University, especial the faculty, for helping her reach her goal.

“I cannot tell you enough how the faculty helped me,” she smiled. “They’re tremendous, they’re wonderful. I would recommend this school to anybody!”
