The Business of Biking by the Bay

CORPUS CHRTISTI, Texas – Dr. Ben Blanco took his Retail Management class to Harley Davidson on South Padre Island Drive, for a lecture and store tour from owner Preston Douglas on Wednesday, Feb. 20. Douglas was a lawyer prior to his purchasing the Harley store in 2000.

“This is fun for me,” said Douglas. “It gives us a chance to do something different, and I get to see people who are trying to figure out what to do with their lives.”

For the past 12 years, Douglas has been very generous to the students of the Island University donating his time after hours to talk business with Blanco’s students. The Corpus Christi Harley Davidson is affiliated with the Harley Owners Group (HOG), a riding club that encourages owners to travel to different locations to collect points and earn prizes.

“The more they ride, the more fun they have, which means more business and service for Harley Davidson,” said Douglas.

Douglas explained to students that not only does Harley Davidson sell products, they sell the experience. Harley Davidson gives their customers the ability to fully-customize their bike. Harley also sells a variety of merchandise ranging from clothes and pet products, to jewelry and knives.

“I’m actually a bike rider,” said Brooke Alumbaugh, a junior accounting major. “It is nice to get opinions about how they run their company.”

Douglas says, due to the fact that Corpus Christi is known for its supreme weather nearly year-round, Harley sells 650-700 motorcycles a year.

“Douglas offers the students advice based on his experiences,” said Dr. Blanco. “They can benefit greatly from his successes and failures.”
