College of Business Honors 2013 Kirkland Distinguished Visitor Edward A. Martin

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The College of Business honored Edward A. Martin as the 2013 recipient of the G. Russell Kirkland Distinguished Visitor in Business Administration Award on Wednesday, April 17, in the Performing Arts Center.

Martin, President and CEO of Berry Contracting Inc., a multi-discipline construction, fabrication, and maintenance company headquartered in Corpus Christi, spoke to a crowd of more than 300 students, faculty, and community members about the elements of success when running a business.

“Making ethical decisions is so critical in this age of technology because people meet your reputation before they meet you,” said Martin. “If you’re an ethical person, you give respect and you’ll get respect.”

Martin is the 14th recipient of the annual award that was created in 2000 to honor Kirkland’s distinguished service to the University, Corpus Christi and South Texas. Recipients are chosen for their personal accomplishments and contributions to the success of students, faculty, the University, and the Corpus Christi community. The award honors the memory of the late Mr. Kirkland and his years of service to the University, Corpus Christi, and South Texas.

“You cannot succeed if you don’t fail,” Martin said. “Always do the right thing by your employees even if it doesn’t end in high profits.”

Later in the afternoon, Martin and outstanding students in the College of Business were  honored at a luncheon held at the Omni Corpus Christi Hotel Bayfront Tower.
