First Outstanding Online Educator Mixer to Honor Faculty Members

A new event was created this year to honor faculty members from each college who have surpassed the expectations as online educators. The Outstanding Online Educator Awards and mixer was hosted by the Office of Distance Education and Learning Technologies as part of National Distance Learning Week (NDLW) from November 10-14.

This year’s award recipients were:

  • College of Science & Engineering – Dr. Blair Sterba-Boatwright, Professor of Mathematics
  • College of Nursing and Health Sciences – Dr. Cristi Day, Assistant Clinical Professor
  • College of Education – Dr. Frank Spaniol, Professor of Kinesiology
  • College of Business – Dr. Monica Hernandez, Associate Professor of Marketing
  • College of Liberal Arts – Dr. Shane Anderson, Associate Professor of Music

The criteria for the candidates from the Island University was established by Dr. Lauren Cifuentes, Director of the Office of Distance Education and Learning Technologies, and sent to the dean of each individual college who then selected one faculty member to receive an award of $250.

University organizers plan to make this an annual event during NDLW every year. During NDLW week, educational institutions across America educate instructors and students about the substantial power of distance learning while showcasing accomplishments.

NDLW is sponsored by the United States Distance Learning Association to create a powerful alliance to meet the growing education and training needs of learning- communities that use modern concepts of communication technologies to acquire a broad multi-discipline environment for learning.
