Reason #347839 Why it’s Great to Work at the Island University: New Wellness Release Time Program

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Island University is affirming its commitment to the health and well-being of its faculty and staff with the implementation of a new program – the Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi Wellness Release Time program.

The Wellness Release Time program provides full-time, benefits-eligible employees 30 minutes of release time during normal work hours, up to three times a week, for participation in physical exercise and fitness activities. Supervisor approval is required and wellness activities must take place on campus.

The main objectives of the voluntary program are to provide a supportive environment that encourages employees to adopt healthy behaviors and positive lifestyle changes, improve job performance, increase work satisfaction and reduce health care and insurance costs.

“I hope everyone takes part in this amazing benefit granted to Islander employees,” said Shelby Stamets, Fitness and Wellness Coordinator at Recreational Sports. “Taking care of your health and well-being directly correlates to higher job performance and satisfaction at work. Employees should not feel guilty when utilizing this Wellness Release Time. This is a win-win for employees and the employer.”
The Island University offers many other opportunities for faculty and staff to stay physically fit and most of the options are available at a free or reduced rate, including:

  • Islanders Walk for Wellness offers free and unlimited use of the Island Hall track when participants are wearing a special free shirt provided by Rec Sports.
  • Punch Pass Program offers five free visits each month to the Dugan Wellness Center. Value of pass is $20 per month.
  • Islander Rewards Program offers 50 percent payback of Dugan Wellness Center membership fees when faculty/staff log a set number of usages of the gym (approximately 45 workouts a semester).
  • Employee Wellness Program offers 20 full-time, benefits eligible employees one semester of complimentary gym membership, wellness seminars, group fitness and access to a personal trainer.
