Islander Nursing Students Inducted into Sigma Theta Tau Honor Society

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Forty-six distinguished nursing students were inducted into the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, Eta Omicron chapter at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi on Aug. 4, in the Performing Arts Center. Those inducted received their honorary cords, along with an inductee ribbon from Eta Omicron Chapter officers. Thirty-eight of the inductees earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree and eight inductees earned a Master of Science in Nursing.

“I’ve always wanted to be a part of this distinguished group,” said Taryn Espinoza, who earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. “I would see the stories about other students who were a part of this honor society and I would look up to them for guidance. This is a special milestone for me.”

The mission of Sigma Theta Tau is to advance world health and celebrate nursing excellence in scholarship, leadership and service. Eta Omicron, the local chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International, was chartered in 1984 by many faculty members of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences (CONHS) who were then part of Corpus Christi State University.

“Sigma Theta Tau is a prestigious society because it recognizes excellence, integrity, scholarship and leadership,” said Julie Fomenko, CONHS Clinical Assistant Professor and current Vice-President of the Eta Omicron chapter. “Only the top 35% of the class or individuals with at least a 3.5 GPA are invited to join. There are about 500 chapters around the globe and our new inductees now have access to this incredible network of nursing scholars.”

Fomenko was the keynote speaker for the induction ceremony and gave her speech titled, “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!”
