Island University Graduate Students Offer Free Parenting Classes to Local Community

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Antonio E. Garcia Arts & Education Center has consistently strived to enhance creative thinking, problem solving and stewardship for all members of the Coastal Bend community. For 23 years it has played a key role in expanding the growth and development of young minds, and in 2004, became part of the College of Education and Human Development at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi.

Through Dec. 9, the Garcia Center will offer free parenting classes every Thursday from 5:30-7 p.m. at its location at 2021 Agnes St. The program support’s the centers mission of providing a venue and services for families to celebrate life, better their health and continue their education.

“These classes are meant to assist families who are in need of resources to help strengthen the bond between family members,” said Andrea Elizondo, Director of the Garcia Center. “There is a growing concern regarding the relationship between family members and the increase in cases of child abuse and neglect. Our goal is to help these families better parent and provide preventative measures to ensure a happy home.”

The sessions cover an array of topics from Effective Family Communication to Parenting Together. Classes are led by graduate interns from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi under the supervision of a licensed counselor, allowing members of the community access to a quality service that otherwise may be out of reach because of financial constraint.

“The students who come from the University are absolutely vital and a tremendous help. Without them, we could not offer the services many families depend upon,” said Elizondo. “Here at the Garcia Center it’s like a big family, it’s a beautiful thing.”

Parents are allowed to attend whichever classes they choose with no registration necessary. Participants of the event will receive a snack and certificate of completion at the conclusion of the course. For more information and a full list of topics, visit
