Endowed Scholarship Banquet Honors Students and Donors at Island University

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – More than 100 scholarship donors and 150 scholarship recipients attended the Endowed Scholarship Banquet at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi held Nov. 15 in the University Center, Anchor Ballroom. At the event, scholarship donors were honored for their generosity and were able to personally meet and mingle with the students who benefit from their philanthropy.

An endowed scholarship is intended by its donor to provide scholarship support not just for one year, or for one generation, but in perpetuity. Through this generous funding structure, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi is able to keep a college education within financial reach of as many families a possible. The scholarships allow the University to recruit and retain well-qualified students, recognize students’ outstanding performance and reward their exceptional potential. These long-term investments allow for the University to plan ahead and provide one of the most secure sources of future revenue.

The banquet included special remarks from Ruben Bonilla, who, together with his wife, established the Ruben and Rosie Bonilla Endowed Scholarship in Education; and Ivan Froese, a freshman theatre major at A&M-Corpus Christi who received the Doughtry Carr Scholarship.

“Without the Doughtry Carr Scholarship, I would not have been able to attend A&M-Corpus Christi and eventually realize my dreams and flourish to the maximum capacity that I know I am capable of,” said Froese. “Now that I’m officially an Islander, I am having the time of my life. I am learning new things, meeting new people and reaching for new opportunities.”

Additionally, six donors were honored as new members of the Endowed Scholarship Council for either new or upgraded endowments. They are:

  • John and Augusta Doan Endowed Scholarship
  • Jean N. Boatwright Endowed Scholarship
  • PlainsCapital Bank Endowed Scholarship in Finance
  • John W. Hill Teacher Education Scholarship Endowment
  • Padre Island Business Association Scholarship
  • Instituto de Cultura Hispanica de Corpus Christi Scholarship
