Living Legend Dr. Sylvia Earle Headlines Island University Distinguished Speaker Series

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Mark your calendars for an adventure into the wondrous ocean during the spring 2017 Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi Distinguished Speaker Series featuring Dr. Sylvia Earle, Oceanographer and Explorer. Join us for her talk titled, “Exploring and Caring for Earth’s Magnificent Ocean,” on Thursday, March 2, 2017 from 8-9:30 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center. Tickets will go on sale on Wednesday, Feb. 1. Ticket prices range from $30 to $150.

A free Student Forum will take place before the Distinguished Speaker Series event from 2-3 p.m. on the same day.

Earle’s research concerns marine ecosystems with special reference to exploration, conservation, the development and use of new technologies for access and effective operations in the deep sea. Her special focus is on developing a global network of areas in the ocean called, “Hope Spots,” which will safeguard the living systems that provide support for global processes, from maintaining biodiversity to providing stability and resiliency in response to accelerating climate change.

Earle has led more than 100 expeditions, logged more than 7,000 hours underwater, lectured in 90 countries and received more than 100 national and international honors. She has authored more than 225 scientific, technical and popular publications, including more than a dozen books.

Earle is a Founding Advisory Board Chair for the Harte Research Institute for Gulf of Mexico Studies at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. She is also a National Geographic explorer-in-residence, a Time Magazine’s first Hero of the Planet and a Library of Congress Living Legend.
