Coastal Bend Comes Together to Illuminate Campus, Kick off Holiday Season during Islander Lights

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Come get in the holiday spirit, celebrate Islander pride, and join Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi in helping the less fortunate at the 13th annual Islander Lights celebration on Friday, Nov. 30. It will be a night full of festive activities that is free and open to the public, but those who attend are encouraged to spread holiday cheer by donating new, unwrapped, toys for the Marine Corps’ Toys for Tots toy drive.

“Islander Lights is a fun way for students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the community to come together to celebrate the university, the holidays, and the end of the fall semester,” said Jennifer Randolph, assistant director of Student Life in the Division of Student Engagement and Success.

Islander Lights kicks off with the Holiday Bash in the University Center from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Guests can plan to take free photos with Santa, play games, decorate cookies, enjoy free snacks, go to the petting zoo, and much more. Campus visitors can then head over to Lee Plaza to witness the entire campus become illuminated in Islander blue, green and white lights during the Lighting Ceremony from 7:30-7:45 p.m. Guests can come early to shop for unique gifts of handmade arts and crafts creations provided by local vendors at the Arts & Crafts Market from 4-7:30 p.m. in University Center.

“We’re excited for attendees to see campus from Izzy’s holiday express train for the first time,” shared Randolph. “Another new addition is the Academic Forest – a display of mini trees decorated by academic areas to represent their discipline. Both are great ways for little future Islanders to see the campus and what sorts of academic opportunities the Island University has to offer.”

The night will wrap up with the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Music Department’s 18th annual holiday concert, Sounds of the Season, at 8 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center (PAC). At the concert, Islander students and faculty will perform a wide variety of holiday favorites, from familiar Christmas carols to new classics the whole family will love. Tickets can be brought online here or at the door, and are $10 for adults, $5 for students and children, and free for children age 4 and younger. A “will call” ticket booth will be open at the information desk in the University Center from 5:30-7 p.m. and tickets can be purchased there or in the PAC Box Office beginning at 5:30 p.m. the day of the event. Will call will be available in the PAC after 7 p.m.

“Sounds of the Season is the time of year when all our students come together in a single concert,” Dr. Hope Thacker, assistant professor of Music at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. “We love giving this gift to the Island and Corpus Christi community. We are so grateful for those who attend because all proceeds from Sounds of Season go directly to student scholarships. Don’t miss out on our annual sing-a-long finale, and be sure to listen to the musical offerings happening during the Islander Lights Holiday Bash!”
