6 Alternative Activities for Making this Spring Break One to Remember

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Ah, Spring Break… One of the few times students have the opportunity to breathe and relax. The beach is an obvious draw for Spring Breakers and at the Island University, we have access to the beach every day. Here are some alternative activities for you to make the most out of Spring Break 2019!

  1. Take Time for Yourself

During the busy semester, it is easy to fall behind on self-care. Take time to reset and relax. Recent research suggests that spending 20 minutes in an urban park will make someone happier regardless of whether they are engaging in exercise or not. This free and easily accessible resource is good to remember year-round whether you toss the football or sit under a tree to study. There is even good evidence that shows physical exercise is more relaxing and has a longer positive impact than going out on the town with friends on a Friday night. Once Spring Break is over, you’ll come back to your classes feeling refreshed and energized.

  1. Learn a New Skill

With your extra time during the break, now is the perfect opportunity to let out your creativity and try something new. This could be learning a new sport, crafting, building something, or even something as simple as playing with a child and entering their world of make-believe. Creativity induces positive health effects, including on the heart. In a recent study, researchers discovered that no matter the artistic experience of the participants, about 75 percent experienced a decrease in their levels of cortisol, a hormone that the body secretes to respond to stress. 1. Volunteer

Doing something nice for other people not only brings in good karma but also makes those you’ve helped feel good – it’s a win-win. Volunteering leads to a greater sense of community, as well as increased happiness and self-confidence. It also helps build new skills and career experience. Check out this web post to learn more about the benefits of volunteerism, and how to find the right cause for you.

Around the Coastal Bend, there are many organizations that would be happy to accept a helping hand. Whether you have a passion for animals or people, there’s sure to be a place for you. One such event where you could volunteer is the Islander Green Team’s Garden Work Day on Thursday, March 14, from 3-5 p.m. at the Antonio E. Garcia Arts and Education Center, located at 2021 Agnes Street. Also, keep in mind that registration is still open for the Big Event, an Island University initiative where the campus comes together for one day to volunteer and express gratitude for the community at large. The event will take place on Saturday, April 13, with registration ending on Friday, March 29.

  1. Get Ahead on Homework

Now that you’re in a more anxiety-free period, take time to get ahead of the game and break the cycle of stress. Don’t let your schoolwork creep up on you. By starting your assignments earlier, you have more time to plan and tackle them a little each day. Hitting the books sooner also has multiple benefits, including less stress and the option to practice exam techniques. So, even if you were blessed with no homework over the break, use some of this time to get ahead. It could save you from many future headaches.

  1. Explore Your City

There are hidden gems in every city, including Corpus Christi! The Sparkling City by the Sea has many things to offer from horseback riding to escape rooms to the Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History. Enjoy a walk down the Sea Wall and snap a selfie with “Mirador De La Flor,” the Selena memorial statue. Check out the exhibitions at the Art Museum of South Texas – you can get in free with your SandDollar$. Support Islander Theater students by attending “Mamma Mia!” at the Harbor Play House for just $15 with your student discount. Or visit Xena the sloth at the Texas State Aquarium. 1. Show Your Support for Local Athletics

We may be on a break, but the Islanders Athletics teams never quit. Gather some friends and attend some games while showing your school pride and support for your fellow Islanders. We guarantee you’ll make some lifelong memories in the process. To purchase tickets or check out the game schedule, visit the Islanders Athletics Calendar page.

Also, take time out of your week to support some of our local Corpus Christi teams. Did you know the city has its own ice hockey, soccer and baseball teams? You never know; you may end up becoming a fan!
