A&M-Corpus Christi Hosts ‘Adulting 101’ Series

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The term “adulting” refers to young adults behaving in ways characteristic of an older more responsible adult, especially the accomplishment of mundane but necessary tasks. It’s a hot topic for college age youth as they transition from parental involvement in many aspects of their lives to living independently. Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi is doing its part to help students bridge this knowledge gap with a series of Adulting 101 workshops.

“I think of adulting as all the things you learn through experiences, both good and bad,” said Bonnie Stewart-Richlen, Project GRAD engagement coordinator and Adulting 101 organizer. “College students are often thrust into adult life ill-prepared and need to learn a whole lot very quickly. We’re trying to prepare them to survive and thrive through those experiences and beyond.”

The first Adulting 101 class took place Feb. 28 and was all about cars – including maintenance and responding to a roadside emergency. The Island University’s Project GRAD and I-CARE programs partnered with Dub’s Garage, a local repair shop, to offer the seminar. The 20 Islander students and handful of faculty and staff in attendance were treated to lunch and useful giveaways including a flash light, tire pressure gauge, and coupons for their next oil change.

“I broke down outside of Kingsville once when I was younger and I panicked,” said Samantha Marie Lopez, nursing major. “Now I feel better prepared for those types of situations.”

The next two Adulting 101 classes are:
