Las Cafeteras, Sybarite5 Part of a Diverse 2019-2020 Lineup for Furgason Bravo! Series
Furgason Bravo! 2019-2020 Concert Series at the Performing Arts Center
The Performing Arts Center at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi has announced its 2019-2020 Gloria and Robert R. Furgason Bravo! Series featuring six concert events.
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Performing Arts Center (PAC) at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi revealed today, July 31, its slate of diverse musical artists set to perform as part of the 2019-2020 Gloria and Robert A. Furgason Bravo! Series for the Performing Arts. The lineup, which includes four new acts and two familiar favorites, was unveiled at a press conference this morning led by PAC Director Jim Moore. The location of the press conference – on the PAC stage – offered guests an up-close and personal experience into the exhilarating world of concert performance from the artist’s point of view.
“The Bravo! Series brings in programs from all over the country that are unique and offer different perspectives,” said Moore.
Tickets to all shows go on sale Monday, Aug. 5, at 9 a.m. and individuals receive a 15% discount when purchasing tickets for three or more BRAVO! performances. Tickets can be purchased at tamucc.tix.com, or call 361.825.ARTS. The Bravo! Series is funded by a City of Corpus Christi Arts & Cultural Commission Hotel Occupancy Tax fund.
Las Cafeteras, Saturday, Oct. 19, 7:30 p.m.
Directly on the heels of Hispanic Heritage Month, the sensational socially conscious ensemble Las Cafeteras kicks off the new Bravo! season with its remarkable brand of folk music and spoken word. Equal parts education and entertainment, the high-energy sextet utilizes instruments from the Son Jarocho tradition in Veracruz, Mexico, including the quijada (donkey jaw bone), the requinto jarocho (plucked string instrument popular in conjunto jarocho ensembles), and the cajon (box-shaped percussion instrument); in addition, Las Cafeteras also incorporates the shoe-striking group of dance styles known as zapateado.
Jazz Ambassadors of the US Army Field Band, Monday, Nov. 4, 7 p.m.
In November, the Jazz Ambassadors of the US. Army Field Band will make its debut at the Performing Arts Center for a free concert; to attend, patrons must pick up reserved tickets (limit of four per person) in advance at the box office. The 19-piece ensemble was formed in 1969 as a jazz orchestra and tours globally. To date, it has performed in Mexico, Canada, Japan, India, and Europe. The orchestra has also performed at many of the signature international jazz events including the Montreaux Jazz Festival, the second-largest annual jazz festival in the world.
Michael Martin Murphey, Sunday, Dec. 15, 7 p.m.
Easily the longest-running tradition in the Series, legendary country singer-songwriter Michael Martin Murphey has played Bravo! for 14 seasons running. Murphey has written songs for a wide range of artists, including Johnny Cash, Bobbie Gentry, The Monkees, and John Denver. His songs have also been recorded by Cher, Manfred Mann’s Earth Band and Lyle Lovett, to name a few. Murphey’s most recent album, “Austinology – Alleys of Austin,” was released in 2018 and featured performances by Willie Nelson, Steve Earle, Kelly Willis and Gary P. Nunn. This show is presented by KFTX and Whataburger.
Glenn Miller Orchestra, Thursday, Feb. 20, 7:30 p.m.
The second familiar favorite of the Series is the Glenn Miller Orchestra, which returns to the PAC on Feb. 20. The 2019 concert proved to be a hit with Corpus Christi fans, according to Moore. The orchestra plays nearly 300 each year, performing nearly every night for 48 weeks each year. GMO Musical Director Nick Hilscher recorded a special promotional greeting to be shared with the orchestra’s fans in Corpus Christi. Visit YouTube to see the clip.
Sybarite5, Saturday, Feb. 22, 7:30 p.m.
Bravo! concludes with a debut performance by the ground-breaking string quintet Sybarite5 on Feb. 22. The first string quintet to win the Concert Artists Guild International Competition, Sybarite5’s album “Outliers” features all new works from American composers. The quintet also released a collection of arrangements of popular songs originally composed by the alternative rock band Radiohead called “Everything In Its Right Place.”
