There are currently good indications for cannabidiol use in epilepsy – Epidiolex is a medication used to treat rare forms of epilepsy known as Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. The active ingredient in Epidiolex is cannabidiol CBD, so today we ask the question ‘is CBD oil an effective treatment for epilepsy?’ Cannabidiol, or CBD for short, is the 2nd most common cannabinoid found in cannabis plants, with the first being the psychoactive compound THC, however CBD has no psychotropic effect. In the UK, THC is a controlled substance which is why many CBD products are made from CBD extracted from hemp plants, which are cannabis plants with no more than 0.3% THC levels. Epilepsy is a common condition that affects the brain, leading to frequent seizures. It is thought that seizures are bursts of electrical activity in the brain that temporarily affect how it works. More studies also indicate the use of cannabidiol in epilepsy could improve the quality of life for a significant number of epileptics.
