What is steatocystoma multiplex? Steatocystoma multiplex is a skin disorder characterized by the development of multiple noncancerous (benign) cysts known as steatocystomas. These growths begin in the skin's sebaceous(oil) glands, which normally produce an oily substance called sebum that lubricates the skin and hair. Steatocystornas are filled with sebum. In affected individuals, steatocystomas typically first appear during adolescence. These cysts are usually the only sign of the condition. The condition may be genetic/genetic mutation or more common sporadically present. The onset at puberty is presumably due to hormonal stimulus on the oil glands. They arise on scrotal skin and can be seen on other parts having oil glands like armpits, face, back, etc. The size of cysts can be 2-20 mm but they may be several centimetres in diameter. They contain an oily, yellow liquid which can solidify after particular time because of calcium deposit. They may become inflamed and heal with scarring. Steatocystomas are thought to come from an abnormal lining of the passageway to the oil glands (sebaceous duct). What is the cause of steatocystoma multiplex?
