Ammonia is the byproduct of protein breakdown. In a normal person with normal, healthy kidneys, ammonia is broken down into urea for excretion. If this doesn’t happen and ammonia builds up in the body, it can cause several problems. High levels of ammonia in the body can have the following side effects: •Neurotoxic effects •Poor cognitive function •Lethargy •Irritability •Seizures •Breathing problems •Brain swelling •Ammonia body odor In order to solve this problem, it’s important to know what causes it. Here are some of the common causes of ammonia buildup in the body: •Fatty liver •Cirrhosis of the liver •Kidney damage •Acidosis •Low potassium •Medication •Alcohol •High-protein diet If you notice an ammonia breath odor or body odor on keto, it could be related to liver or kidney damage. It could also simply mean that you should increase your vegetable intake or lower your protein intake.
