When googling you find the following definition: Premature ejaculation occurs when a man ejaculates sooner during intercourse than he or his partner would like. Medically speaking there is no uniform definition to diagnose premature ejaculation. What can cause premature ejaculation? Unfortunately the exact mechanism is unknown, although it is though to be caused by a combination of psychological and biological factors. - Psychological factors: mental health problem, relationship problems, a poor body image and excessive worrying about premature ejaculation. - Biological factors: erectile dysfunction, abnormal hormone levels, an infection of your prostate, a side effect of the medication you use or it may be genetically determined. How common is premature ejaculation? Most studies estimate the prevalence during the previous 12 months to be between 20-30% in men over 18. Which makes it a very common complaint. When should you contact your doctor? Now a long as you experience premature ejaculation infrequently it is not a cause for concern, but it could be wise to contact your doctor if: - You are almost always ejaculating within one minute after starting intercourse. - If you can’t delay an ejaculation during intercourse. - Or if you constantly feel stressed of frustrated when thinking or committing to intercourse and therefore tend to avoid it. How to treat premature ejaculation? - Visit your doctor for a medical examination. If necessary your doctor could also refer you to a urologist or mental health professional. - Self-help techniques. - For couples who are in a long-term relationship couples therapy might help. This therapy aims to explore issues that may be affecting your relationship. With the goal to resolve them. - In addition counseling could also be follow individually. There you will be talking with a mental health professional about your experiences and relationships. This may help to reduce stress, decrease performance anxiety and improve your coping. - Furthermore counseling is often combined with medication.
