Sildenafil, also known as Viagra, is a phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitor used in the treatment of erectile dysfunction. It is also used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension. In this video, I will discuss the common adverse effects of sildenafil. Sildenafil is well-tolerated by most individuals. Mild side effects may include the following. Gastrointestinal problems such as dyspepsia. Headache. Flushing. Nasal congestion, and nasopharyngitis. One of the more serious adverse effects is prolonged, painful erection, lasting more than six hours. Patients are advised to seek immediate medical attention in such instances. If left untreated, it can lead to permanent penile tissue damage. Another rare, but one of the serious side effects is visual disturbances, which can lead to sudden loss of vision. Patients should discontinue the drug and seek immediate medical attention in such situations to prevent permanent visual loss. Sudden hearing loss is another serious adverse effect that should be addressed immediately.
