Ketogenic therapy or medical ketosis is not the same thing as a keto diet. Ketogenic therapy is the purposeful use of the physiologic state of ketosis to treat a specific medical condition, such as a serious mental illness like bipolar disorder, under the guidance of a healthcare professional. It is possible to get into ketosis following any type of diet (aka vegan, vegetarian, carnivore, omnivore, Mediterranean, etc.) if it is designed to adequately restrict carbs. When the body switches into the state of ketosis, instead of burning glucose (from carbs) it uses ketones (from fat) as the primary fuel source. In order to properly implement ketogenic therapy, it is necessary to monitor ketone levels. To treat a medical condition, patients should work with a provider who will guide them in setting target ketone levels specific to their needs. Ketogenic therapy is more comprehensive than just a diet: It is a serious medical intervention that requires clinical oversight to administer labs, monitor blood work, and assess the many factors that impact metabolic health.
