First remember to keep your carbs low—between 20 and 50 grams per day or less. You want to make sure you have enough protein in your diet so that you don’t break down muscle protein for energy. On average, you should consume about 3 to 6 ounces of protein each meal. Each day, you should consume a minimum of .36 to .7 grams of protein per pound of body weight. Too much protein can strain the liver and kidneys, leading to the development of kidney stones. It can also lead to excess body fat. When you’re eating the proper amount of protein, you allow your body to tap into your fat reserve for energy. As you adapt to keto and intermittent fasting, your protein and dietary fat requirements will decrease. Oftentimes, you won’t need more fat than what’s already found in your protein sources. If you want to maintain your weight or even gain weight, feel free to add more fat to your diet.
