Islander Improv

The Breakers
The Breakers Improvisation Ensemble is comprised of up to 6 current undergraduate students majoring in Theatre. It is a scholarship performance ensemble and is the only ensemble like it in the nation. In addition to performing in the Department of Theatre and Dance, they engage in community outreach, campus collaborations, and workshops.

Auditions
Students must audition for the Breakers Improv Ensemble. To audition, they must have and maintain a 3.0, and a B or better in all Theatre courses. Finally, all students must have completed or be currently enrolled in Improv I the semester of their audition. All Breakers must take Improv II, if cast in the ensemble. • Competitions
Each year The Breakers Improv Ensemble (and Islander Improv, see below) competes in the College Improv Tournament (CIT) Southwest Regional. They create their own original long-form show and compete against other colleges in the region for a chance to compete nationally in Chicago each year. It generally takes place in January of every year in Houston. You can find out more about the CIT at: http://collegeimprovtournament.com/
  • Collaborations
Applied improvisation is using improvisational skills and principles in non-theatrical disciplines or events. The Breakers often teach Communicating Science where improv skills and techniques help science students and professionals better communicate their research with improv! Additionally, The Breakers have also assisted in creating scenes for performance or education with the following groups on campus:
    • College of Nursing and Health Sciences
    • I-TEAM
    • Advising for the College of Science and Engineering
    • Department of Social Sciences
    • Office of Recruitment and Admissions
    • College of Science and Engineering
    • Islander Improv

Islander Improv
There is A LOT of improvisation happening at TAMUCC! There is also a club dedicated to improvisation on campus, and it is open to any currently enrolled student. You can find them at @IslanderImprov on social media, and you can find them on I-Engage if you are a current student at https://tamucc.campuslabs.com/engage – just search Islander Improv. They have game days, where they just play short-form improv games for fun; they have performances at least twice a semester; they have club socials; and they also go compete at CIT (College Improv Tournament) every year. All events are open to students and the public!
