Student Reference

Starfish is an undergraduate student case management system used for notifying students of their course progress and for connecting students to faculty and support services at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi.

Each long Fall & Spring semester, undergraduate faculty teaching 1000, 2000, & select 3000/4000 level courses will be asked to provide Course Progress Feedback for students enrolled in select undergraduate courses using Starfish.

The purpose of Course Progress Feedback from Starfish is to:

Inform students of their Course Progress
Inform students of the need to meet with their Instructor to work towards a resolution regarding concerns (and)
Connect students with support from either an Academic Advisor, Academic Coach, or Scholastic Coordinator.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Faculty using Starfish to raise notifications have the option of raising Kudos, Flags, Referrals, & To-dos.

Each item raised in Starfish generates a specific automated message and provides the option for faculty to provide additional feedback to students. When used, the system generates an automated message, which is emailed from faculty to students and includes faculty comments if provided. Students have the option to reply directly to the faculty member who submitted the alert.

Further, depending on the particular item raised, support personnel provide outreach to students to provide additional guidance and support; this often includes emailing and calling students who received flags in an effort to help identify potential reasons for unsatisfactory progress, to connect students with various TAMU-CC programs and personnel, and to communicate back to faculty any information learned from student-staff interactions.

Starfish offers four notification types: Kudos, Flags, Referrals, & To-dos

Kudos are designed to send notifications to students commending them on their progress and efforts
Flags are designed to send notifications to students when there is concern regarding unsatisfactory course progress. In general, students are encouraged to speak with their instructor to work towards a resolution; additionally, support personnel provide intervention outreach to supplement the interventions that are taking place in the classroom

Referrals are designed to send notifications to students requesting they receive assistance from programs outside of the classroom; when raised, support personnel perform outreach to students on behalf of the individual(s) who raised these items to address any concerns or provide additional support.
To-dos are designed to send notifications to students requesting the completion of a particular task often with the inclusion of a deadline for completion
