Internships

An Internship is work experience that integrates the strengths of a business education with the skills and training of on-the-job experience. It complements and enhances a student’s academic training and provides a "real world" introduction to that individual’s career field. Academic credit can be earned during the freshman or sophomore year for BUSI 2398, Internship in Business. This credit can be for an internship that relates to any College of Business major and will count as a lower-level business elective. Students must meet the minimum GPA requirement of a 2.75 to be eligible to earn credit for an internship.

Juniors and Seniors who are TAMU-CC business majors can earn credit for an upper-level elective in their major field. Students must hold junior standing or above and with a grade point average of 2.75 in their upper division work, 9 hours upper division work completed in major, and 12 hours of upper division general course work. Accounting majors will need to have 12 hours of upper division course work in accounting completed and an upper-level GPA of 3.0 or higher to apply for an internship. Note: The ACCT 4398 internship course will not meet the 27 upper-level accounting or 24 upper-level business elective requirements to sit for the CPA exam in Texas (per TSBPA rules).

Students are assigned a faculty sponsor who will assign a grade in the internship course. The grade will be comprised of a work journal, final report or presentation, and an evaluation completed by the internship supervisor.

The salary is negotiated between the employer and student. Students will normally perform some routine tasks but need to spend the majority of their time working on a challenging project or function that requires critical thinking, imagination, originality, common sense, and emphasizes the development of professional skills.

Students are expected to:

  • Meet with his/her academic advisor during the semester prior to enrolling in the internship course to discuss how an internship course will fit into the student’s degree plan.
  • Interview with employers.
  • After receiving an internship offer, enter information about the internship into Handshake and contact the College of Business internship coordinator to secure a faculty sponsor.
  • Register for the internship course after all paperwork is complete and review the internship course syllabus and requirements specified by the faculty sponsor.
  • Complete 120 hours of internship experience during the semester.
  • Provide a copy of the final report or presentation to the faculty sponsor and the internship coordinator.

CREDIT FOR THE INTERNSHIP WILL BE WITHHELD UNTIL THE EVALUATION FROM THE EMPLOYER AND THE COPY OF THE WRITTEN REPORT ARE IN THE FILES OF THE INTERNSHIP COORDINATOR.
