For CNEP students
You must complete an application every semester you wish to enroll in practicum and internship. You must complete the application via Tevera. To apply for Tevera, you will need to visit the COEHD Marketplace to purchase a Tevera license at a discounted rate of $115.00.
Upon completing your online purchase, an automated alert will be sent to Rachel Perez, the administrative associate in the CNEP department. Rachel will then add you to the Tevera system.
Soon after being added to the system, you can expect to receive an email from Tevera asking you to register as a user. Please take these three important steps:
- Watch this video to get an overview of Tevera’s benefits.
- Add noreply@app.tevera.com to your contacts to ensure that you receive the registration email. In some cases, these messages have gone to junk mail, so be sure to check there as well.
If your site will not (or has not) complete(d) a background check, you will need to complete the background check and FERPA forms, and submit those to TAMU-CC Career and Professional Development (there is a $25 fee). Once your completed application has been approved, a permit will be entered for you to register.
You must have taken and passed CNEP 5384 The Counseling Process (B or better), CNEP 5381 Psychodiagnosis and Treatment Strategies, and CNEP 5327 Ethical and Legal Issues in Counseling before you are permitted to enroll in practicum. CNEP 5384 and CNEP 5381 have separate pre-requisites; see the CNEP Student Handbook for more information.
Before enrolling in internship, you must pass Practicum (B or better) and a pre-requisite in your specialty area as listed below:
Addictions counseling
- CNEP 5312 Addictions Counseling
School counseling
- CNEP 5316 Developmental School Counseling
Marriage, couple, and family counseling
- CNEP 5320 Introduction to Marriage, Couple, and Family Counseling
You need to get 100 total hours for practicum; 40 of those need to be direct contact with clients.
You need to get 300 total hours for each Internship (600 total), and 120 (240 total) of those need to be direct contact with clients.
Students in the marriage, family, and couples counseling track must have at least 80 direct hours working with couples, families, and parent/child relationships.
Students in the addictions counseling track must earn at least half of their hours in a setting that treats substance use concerns.
There are a few ways to find a site. Speak with the clinical coordinator (Dr. Wannigar Ratanavivan), your faculty advisor, or your practicum/internship instructor. We also hold a site fair every fall and spring semester. Be sure you are subscribed to the CNEP Department Resource Center in Canvas, as we send messages about practicum/internship sites that are looking for students there.
You can count direct hours when you are directly working with a client in session or conducting an intake/crisis counseling over the phone with a client or family member. You may also count direct hours if you are working with another professional (e.g., a teacher or physician) regarding your client.
At the TAMU-CC Community Outreach Collaborative ONLY: students who observe an entire session, and then discuss it with the student who was counseling afterwards, may count 15 minutes of face-to-face time.
Things that DO NOT count as direct hours:
- Talking with another student or your supervisor about a client
- Shadowing someone else who is counseling a client
- Calling clients to remind them of their appointments
- Outreach activities in the community that do not include using counseling skills (For example, having a table with crafts in a public place)
An individual can qualify as a site supervisor if they have a master’s degree in a counseling or related field, have appropriate certifications and/or licenses, and have two years post master’s experience in the field.
Bachelor’s level positions are insufficient to count as a practicum or internship site. While some of it may be counted by your instructor, you need to provide services commensurate with what a master’s-prepared counselor would do, including providing individual and group/family counseling (beyond psychoeducation) with a treatment process that occurs over time.
Though some students have done this in the past, most also need to attain another site because their jobs preclude them being able to do other services on site.
No. Students cannot enroll in practice and internship at the same time.
No. In extraordinary circumstances (i.e., deployment), students have been allowed to enroll both in internship I and II at the same time. However, the student must submit a proposal clearly stating the need to do this, as well as a clearly written schedule as to how they will accomplish this. This proposal is then reviewed by a faculty committee for a decision regarding approval.
Yes. You must have a site where you can either audio or visual record. If your site will not allow this, you will need to find an additional site.
You need an average of an hour weekly of individual or triadic site supervision. If you have more than one site, you should demonstrate your time and commitment to each site by having equitable supervision between the sites. An average of 30-60 minutes of supervision time with each site supervisor is required for students to have a meaningful and productive supervision session.
You also need to engage in university group supervision, which will take place in your practicum and internship class. The experiential nature of group supervision requires active participation and adherence to the protection of client confidentiality set forth by ethical standards and state regulations for professional counselors. Therefore, in-person attendance is mandatory for all practicum and internship students to maintain a secure, interactive, and effective educational environment. You must also adhere to the attendance policy of practicum and internship classes. You are expected to attend class on time, actively participate in class activities and discussion, and respond professionally and appropriately to feedback.
Practicum students only need an average of one hour of supervision with a CNEP doctoral student (university individual supervision). Prior to the start of the semester, a list of doctoral student supervisors will be shared by your instructor via Canvas or Islander Email for you to contact possible doctoral student supervisors. You are responsible for finding a doctoral student supervisor, scheduling, and attending weekly supervision.
You are permitted to have up to two practicum/internship placements in one semester. Exceptions may be made for a student to attain a third site - in this case the student must get explicit permission from the course instructor. You will not be permitted to have more than three site placements during the same semester under any circumstances.
Students may not, under any circumstances, see clients without a designated master’s level clinician on site. This clinician does not always have to be your site supervisor, but the designated clinician must be available to you in case of emergency. In the event your supervisor is out of the office, this should be discussed and decided upon ahead of time.
