New Employee Quick Guide

Hello! Welcome to Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi and thank you for joining the Islander Family. This guide provides a framework of what to expect during your first days and months on the job and suggestions on accelerating your transition to your job.

Don’t worry if you don’t understand everything on this checklist. Your department HR Contact and manager will be happy to assist you.

Before the First Day:

  • Have employment eligibility documents ready to provide to Human Resources on or before your first day.
  • If you plan to start health insurance on the first day of employment, inform the Benefits Manager at benefits@tamucc.edu.  Review insurance options.*
  • Know when to expect the first paycheck. See Payroll Schedules.
  • Know the dress code.
  • Know where to park on the first day.
  • Know the time and location of where to report on the first day.
  • Review the New Hire Checklist.  This will provide you with information and tasks that will need to be completed upon hire. 

* The university begins paying a share of the premiums beginning the 1st of the month that follows the 45th day of employment.

On the First Day:

  • Attend the Welcome Orientation with Human Resources.
  • Know your UIN (Universal Identification Number).

** Unless you enroll on your first day, your insurance will take effect, at the earliest, the 1st of the month that follows the date of your coverage selection.

In the First Week:

  • Set up your outgoing voicemail message.
  • Secure keys and access cards
    • An administrative associate may assist with this task.
    • University Police Department information on security access can be found here.
  • Learn your department’s leave reporting process.
  • Learn your department’s time reporting process, if applicable.
  • Understand the steps for new employee benefits enrollment.
  • Meet with your manager to discuss your job description and performance expectations.

In the First Month:

  • Attend a Benefits Orientation session with the Human Resources Office, as assigned.
  • Attend a New Hire Workshop with the Employee Development Office, as assigned.
  • Review benefits information online, and enroll or waive coverages.
  • Complete the Texas A&M System-required training in TrainTraq.
    • TrainTraq is located on the home page upon signing in to Workday via Single Sign On.
  • Complete any additional job-required training.

First 45 Days

  • Make an insurance selection in Workday within 45 days of employment if you are benefit-eligible. Otherwise, the insurance coverage will automatically default to the university's basic coverage package.

  • How to access System and University policies, regulations, and rules
  • Safety procedures and emergency exits
