Sense of Belonging
At Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, we understand the crucial role that a sense of belonging plays in the academic success and personal development of our students. As part of our Operation GRAD initiative, we are committed to creating an inclusive and supportive environment that fosters a strong sense of community among all students, particularly those from underserved backgrounds.
Creating a Welcoming Environment
Our Sense of Belonging program is designed to help students feel valued and connected to the university community. Through this program, we offer a variety of activities and resources aimed at enhancing the social and emotional well-being of our students. These include:
- Community Building Activities: Regular events and activities that bring students together, helping them to build meaningful relationships and a sense of community.
- Support Groups: Facilitated discussions and support groups where students can share their experiences and challenges in a safe and supportive environment.
Structured Learning Assistance (SLA) Program
A core component of our Sense of Belonging initiative is the Structured Learning Assistance (SLA) program. This program is integrated into key 1000-2000 level courses to provide additional academic support to students who need it. The SLA program includes:
- Structured Learning Sessions: These sessions are designed to reinforce course material and provide students with the skills they need to succeed academically.
- Sense of Belonging Curriculum: Embedded within the SLA program is a curriculum that focuses on helping students feel connected to the university community. These modules include activities and discussions that address common challenges and promote a positive and inclusive campus culture.
Impact and Outcomes
Research shows that students who feel a strong sense of belonging are more likely to succeed academically and persist through to graduation. Our Sense of Belonging program is evidence-based and tailored to meet the unique needs of our diverse student population. By participating in this program, students can expect to:
- Improve Academic Performance: Students who feel supported and connected are better able to focus on their studies and achieve their academic goals.
- Increase Retention Rates: A strong sense of belonging helps reduce dropout rates by providing students with the support they need to stay enrolled and engaged.
- Enhance Personal Well-being: Feeling connected to the university community contributes to overall mental and emotional well-being, helping students thrive both inside and outside the classroom.
