Infographics and Fliers
Importance of graphical content and accessibility
Infographics include data visualizations (e.g., graphs, charts, diagrams) and any other graphic and/or text-heavy image.
Flyers, posters, digital advertising, and other text-heavy images are included in this category due to the "flatness" of these images:
- There is no highlightable text
- Text cannot be copied/pasted into another application
- Text cannot be resized to a legible size
- Individual links cannot be selected, e.g., resource links, social media links, email addresses, websites
Graphical content is more engaging than just textual content. Yet the message and importance is often lost on multiple groups:
- People who cannot see images or text on images
- People who cannot see the importance of color on images
- People who have low vision and need to resize the text
- People who have motor disabilities that make typing difficult or time consuming
- People who have memory impairments when trying to type out text off an image
- People who have reading impairments that need to be able to view text in a customized way
- People who use tablets or mobile devices where text becomes too small or illegible
- People who use English as a second language and may need to translate the text
It is vitally important, as we observe the future trends of graphical content, that our message is still accessible.
Note: If alternative text for the graphic exceeds 155 characters, a different solution must be made to provide the same message and experience for all users.
