Yes. TAMU-CC Dive Operations can send a letter of reciprocity to the organization you are interested in diving with while you are employed with TAMU-CC. If you change employers, TAMU-CC can send your permanent dive training records to your new employer. You can request a letter of reciprocity or record transfer by emailing dive@tamucc.edu.

As an employer, TAMU-CC is required to train employees on all aspects of their job function. Therefore, dive training at TAMU-CC is limited to those that must complete diving as part of their job duties.

How long does it take to earn the Scientific Diver certification?

Divers can typically become a Diver-in-Training (can dive under supervision) within 1-3 months. It typically takes another 6 months to a year to earn the Scientific Diver certification. Divers can earn the Scientific Diver certification in as little as 3 months with dedicated training.

I am a Principal Investigator and I may need to dive in the future, how do I form a dive team? Please contact dive@tamucc.edu before you submit any proposals that involve diving. The Dive Safety Officer will give you the information needed to obtain personnel and resources needed to create a dive team.

Dive Operations can rent the following gear for a fee: cylinders, regulators, dive computers, buoyancy compensators. Divers must typically procure their own personal wetsuit, mask, boots, fins, and gloves. Check with your supervisor to see if your lab provides any personal dive gear.

Yes, training is required to checkout or use the following equipment: backplate/wing configurations, surface supplied equipment, dry suits, full face masks, mixed gas cylinders (e.g. Nitrox), and double cylinder configuration. Dive Operations can provide training for use of all the specialized dive equipment listed.

Divers are required to apply to the TAMU-CC Occupational Health Program (OHP) after which you will receive a detailed packet describing the process for completing a dive medical evaluation. TAMU-CC will be billed directly for the doctor’s visit with no charge to the diver.

Please submit your dive plan for review at least 1-2 weeks prior to your dive. If you are diving in a new dive site or on a new project, you should submit 3-4 weeks in advance in case changes to your dive operation are required.

Any and all injuries should be reported including lacerations and other minor injuries. An accident report should be submitted as soon as possible to ensure workman’s compensation coverage. Please contact the Dive Safety Office immediately after the incident to ensure proper submission of the incident.
