Scientific Diving

Scientific divers pave the path to exploring and understanding our underwater world. TAMU-CC scientific divers perform cutting edge research through grants and contracts awarded from associations such as the National Science Foundation, Smithsonian Institute, Texas Parks and Wildlife, and the Discovery Channel. TAMU-CC adheres to standards set forth by the Occupational Health and Safety Administration and is a member in good standing with the American Academy of Underwater Sciences.

What is required to enter the dive program?

Demonstrate a need to dive. The TAMU-CC dive program is intended to train our employees that are required to dive as part of their job function, only those currently working on TAMU-CC projects are eligible to receive dive training. Contact dive@tamucc.edu to see if you qualify for dive training.

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Show proof of open water SCUBA certification
  • Be able to pass a swim and water skills evaluation
  • Pass a medical evaluation
  • Complete a program application
  • All TAMU-CC Scientific Divers must obtain 100 hours of training and demonstrate a high level of dive proficiency
  • Divers who successfully complete TAMU-CC’s Scientific Diver training program are awarded an AAUS Scientific Diver certification
