FAQs
An online course is an electronic transfer of skills and knowledge via the Internet. It can be self-paced or instructor-led. A traditional face-to-face course is in-person and generally lecture-based.
Our online courses take place in a virtual classroom environment through the Internet. The courses are built around a syllabus, completion schedule, assignments, and tests. Some online courses also use textbooks, CDs, and other instructional materials. The instructor uses e-mail and online discussion boards to answer questions and help students through the course. Taking an online course can be more challenging than a classroom course. It takes self-motivation, discipline, and strong study skills. the benefits for many students of an online class out-weigh the challenges:
- access the course 24/7 from any computer via the Internet
- no need to drive to campus to attend class - saving gas and time
- work at your own pace within a pre-set time period as guided by a completion schedule
- instructors/mentors are actively involved in your online learning experience
- affordable tuition
- easy registration
"Credit" courses are more academic in nature and typically structured to fit within a degree program.
Whereas, non-credit or otherwise referred to as "non-academic" courses typically lead to Industry-based Certifications or offer Continuing Education Credits (CEUs).
For more information about CEUs, see the FAQ below entitled "Continuing Education Credits / Continuing Professional Education".

- It is suggested you review the system requirements for each course as not all are the same.

We strongly encourage our students to complete their Career Training within the designated access term however, we understand some students may need additional time to be successful. Therefore, we consider program extensions on a case-by-case basis.
Certification and certificate are distinct terms.
A Certificate reflects completion of a training and/or education program and accomplishment of intended learning outcomes. Certificates are issued for life or for a specific time period, and cannot be revoked, which means they do not require ongoing maintenance or renewal. There are no state course or grade requirements necessary to earn a certificate.
A student successfully working toward his/her Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals is generally eligible to receive a Certificate. A student who successfully completes a career training program here will receive a certificate showing that they’ve fulfilled all of the requirements of the program to certain standards.
Note: Many of our career training programs offer exam vouchers to cover the cost to sit for the certification exam.
Completing a program and earning a certificate may not be enough to guarantee getting a job. Some programs may also require you to earn a certification, which isn’t the same as a certificate of completion.
A Certification reflects attainment of established criteria for proficiency or competency in a profession or occupation, and is granted upon an assessment of an individual’s knowledge, skills, and abilities by authorities in the field, such as such as professional societies and universities, or by private certificate-granting agencies. Certification is often affiliated with professional associations, trade organizations, or private vendors interested in raising industry standards. A certification program has ongoing requirements for maintaining proficiency or competency, and can be revoked if ongoing requirements are not met. Certification is evidenced by earning the specified number of continuing education credits (CECs) or continuing education units (CEUs) from approved professional development courses.
Certificate programs are often created or endorsed by professional associations, but are typically completely independent from membership organizations. Certifications are very common in fields such as aviation, construction, technology, environment, and other industrial sectors, as well as healthcare, business, real estate, and finance.

What are Continuing Education Units (CEUs)? Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are a nationally recognized and uniform unit of measure for continuing education and training. It is the respected method of granting non-degree credit. One CEU is awarded for each 10 contact hours of instruction. One instructional contact hour is typically equal to 0.1 CEU. CEU credits are not accepted to meet degree requirements. Related term: Continuing professional education (CPE) - continuing education to maintain knowledge and skills. View our Self-Paced Tutorials, Real Estate and PMI programs for CE credits.
What are Professional Development Units (PDU's)? The term Professional Development Units is very often used interchangeably with CEUs; however, the exchange rate of instructional contact hours to PDU varies by organization. View our Fundamentals Courses for PDU credits.
